Feed Ins Heat Up at Western
1999-08-01 Aug. 9, 1999
For most of the day today, play at Western was dominated by the feed in draws of both the 16's and 18's divisions. Play was close and exciting, with even a few tempers flaring up.

Th 18's played their 3rd round qualifying matches early in the morning, followed by the 16's 2nd round feed in action. Brent D'Amico, from Aurora, Colorado, said of the feed in tournament, "It's a lot of matches!" And he's right. They are important matches too, as they count the same towards players rankings as the main draw matches, and the winner of the feed ins determines fifth place in the over-all tournament. All of this only adds to the excitement of the feed in matches.

Fans in Kalamazoo, remember you can "Catch the Shuttle" to Western for free! Pick-up sites are located outside Stowe Stadium, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel, and at Western's Sorensen Courts.

Tuesday Morning Thunderstorms Move Play Indoors
1999-08-01 Early morning thunderstorms rolled through the Kalamazoo area on Tuesday. The 3rd round 16 singles feed-in play scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at Stowe and WMU has moved indoors.

Sun Returns; 16 & 18 Singles Underway

Neighborhood Picnic a Big Success
1999-08-01 Aug 11, 1999
Last night, the West Main Neighborhood held its annual picnic for players, guests, officials and volunteers of the tournament. As usual, the event was a big success. It was an evening of good food, music, raffles, and fun!

The picnic, which was sponsored by Prince, provides a great chance for everyone involved in the tournament to get together, kick back, relax, and have a little fun! The people who live in the West Main neighborhood, despite having to deal with congested traffic, road detours and noise during the ten days of the tournament, do a great job hosting the picnic and making visitors and volunteers of the tournament feel at home.

The highlight of the evening, besides the good food, are the great raffle drawings. Prince and many other local stores and restaurants donate many great prizes, ranging from tennis rackets to t-shirts, to free dinners! Add to this the freindly atmosphere and live music, and its easy to see why the neighborhood picnic has become such a favorite event to many involved with these Nationals.
