Exhibition Update: Jeff Tarango vs. Mariano Zabaleta
2000-08-01 With both previously scheduled Exhibition players unable to compete because of recent injury, the USTA Boys tournament staff quickly found replacements, Jeff Tarango and Mariano Zabaleta.
Zabaleta wins National City Bank Professional Exhibition
2000-08-01 Zabaleta wins National City Bank Professional Exhibition over Jeff Tarango, 8-6 in an 8-game pro-set Exhibition. The two as short-notice replacements put on a good show keeping the attending fans entertained and at times on the edge of their seats. With youth and power on Zabaleta's side, experience worked well to keep the exhibition competitive.In the doubles exhibition, featuring Zabaleta and Tarango against the 2000 18's Doubles #1 seed, K.C. Corkery and Brian Wilson, the professionals won 8-3.
In addition to the two matches, the opening ceremony was a celebration of Rolla Anderson's 80th birthday, and the tremendous enthusiasm, time, and effort he has provided youth tennis, the USTA, and Michigan tennis for over 40 years. Congratulations and Thank You to Rolla Anderson!

2000-08-01 A glorious day of tennis today at the Boys Supernational Hard Court Tournament in Kalamazoo. Mostly sunny skis prevailed along with a gusty wind, met the 16's and 18's third round. The top seed and defending champion in the 18's Philip King from Long Beach, California advanced rather easily over Jayson Hazley from Brandenton, Florida. Next up for King in the fourth round is Evan Austin of Naples, Florida. Number one seed in the 16's Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Indiana advanced to the fourth round with a straight sets win over Jason Weining of Aurora, Colorado. Most seeded players advanced, with the exceptions of number 17 in the 18's Todd Widom, and number 14 seed, Philip Sheng. The Stowe Stadium crowd was treated to a hometown victory as unuseeded Eric Hodgman of Kalamazoo advanced to the fourth round. Hodgman defeated Jason Cordova, 6-0 and 6-4. 2000-08-01 The rain and thunderstorms held off and top seed in the 18's Philip King advanced to the fifth round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Evan Austin. Fourth seed Bo Hodge of Austin, Texas needed three sets to defeat Roger Gubser, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the 16's, number one seed Rajeev Ram took just over an hour to send his doubles partner Jonathan Stokke packing, 6-4, 6-2. The biggest upset of the day was third seed in the 16's, Douglas Stewart falling straight sets to unseeded Robert Yim of Glendale, California, 6-2 and 6-2. Tuesday also saw hometown favorite, Eric Hodgman, lose to the 12th seed Suhkwa Young, 6-3 and 6-1. Fifth round action on Wednesday has 16's top seed Ram taking on 24th seed Chris Kwon. 2000-08-01 And then there were eight. The predicted rains never came on day six at Stowe Stadium, but some great tennis did. Wednesday saw most of the top seeds move on and a few move to the back draw. Top seed in the 16\'s Rajeev Ram moved through the fifth round with a 6-4 and 6-4 victory over the 24th seed Chris Kwon. Second seed Prakash Amritraj also moved into the Quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 14th seed Lester Cook. Fifth seed Brian Baker continued his winning ways with an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over his doubles partner Sukwha Young, the top rated 14 and under player. Over in the 18\'s, top seed and defending champion Philip King was impressive with his 6-0, 6-2 win over unseeded Wade Orr. Second seed Robby Ginepri defeated Adrian Bohane, 6-3, 6-2. The major upset of the day was in the 18\'s, as third seed Ryan Newport lost in straight sets to the number 13 seed Sam Warburg. 2000-08-01 In more ways than one, it was a hot day in Kalamazoo today, especially for the number one seed in the 18s, Phillip King, who breezed through his match in straight sets. King defeated unseeded Wade Orr, 6-0, 6-2. Ytai Abougzir, the number five seed, was victorious over the number twelve seed, Travis Rettenmaier. Rettenmaier gave Abougzir a run for his money in the first set, losing 7-5, but Abougzir stepped it up in the second set, winning it 6-1. Bo Hodge, the number four seed from Athens Georgia won a close match versus Jesse Witten of Naples Florida, 6-4, 6-4. The number nine seed, Tres Davis, beat unseeded Brent D'Amico of California in straight sets. The match of the day was unseeded Troy Hahn's victory over the number eight seed Jeremy Wurtzman. Hahn, of Indiana, beat Rochester's NY Wurtzman 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.Yesterday's Player of the Day in the 16s was Robert Yim of Glendale California. Yim defeated the number three seed, Doug Stewart of Malibu California, with confidence and composure. In the 18s, the unseeded doubles team of Roger Gubster and Drew Hoskins were recognized for their hard-fought win over the top seeded team of K.C. Corkery and Brian Wilson.
Quarterfinal singles matches will begin with the 16s at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The number one seed, Rajeev Ram, will play number thirty one Jordan Dolberg and the number eleven seed, Mathew Cloer meets unseeded Luke Shields. One of the two 18s quarterfinal matches features number five seed Ytai Abougzir against thirteen seed Sam Warburg. In the other 18 quarterfinal match being played on Thursday, Robby Ginepri will play his doubles partner, ninth seeded Tres Davis.
