Thunderstorms Disrupt Opening Day, but Former Champions Reign

Both Justin Gimelstob and Paul Goldstein played many times in Kalamazoo and won 18 singles championships in here, so they are both familiar with Michigan's often unpredictable weather.

Thunderstorms forced this year's National City Exhibition indoors to the Markin Racquet Center. Neither player seemed fazed by the close quarters or the thunder rumbling overhead as they teamed up to beat this year's 18 doubles top seeds Philip Simmonds and Scott Oudsema 8 games to 6.

The two pros then closed out the evening by facing off against each other. Gimelstob defeated Goldstein in a one-set match 6-2.
